Using the forum

The categories#

Posting in the wrong one is not a crime; it just means the people who could
help are not reading it.

Posting#

You need an account to post, and a confirmed email address. Reading needs
neither.

A thread has a title and a body. The title is what people decide on — "Help"
is a title nobody opens, "Kicked with Connection reset every time I enter the
nether" is a title someone answers.

Replies are paginated at twenty per page, and threads at twenty-five per
category page. The "jump to latest" link on a thread goes to the last page
rather than the first, which is what you almost always want on a long one.

Formatting#

The forum takes a subset of Markdown — bold, code blocks, tables, quotes,
spoilers, links and mentions. The full list.

Mentions#

@name notifies that person, if the name exists. Up to ten per post: past
that, a post is a mailing list rather than a conversation.

A name that does not exist stays plain text. You cannot manufacture a link to a
profile that is not there.

Reactions and watching#

Reactions are how you agree with something without adding a reply that says
"this". Use them; a thread with fourteen "same here" replies is harder to read
and no more informative.

Watching a thread sends you a notification when it moves. The bell in the
header collects them.

Getting answered#

The difference between a thread that gets an answer in ten minutes and one that
gets nothing is almost always in the first post:

• Say what you did, what you expected, and what happened instead.
• Include the exact error text. Screenshots of text are worse than the

text, because nobody can search them.

• Say your Minecraft version and whether you use mods. It rules out half

the possibilities in one line.

• Search first. The search covers threads and

replies.

Reporting instead of arguing#

If a post breaks the rules, report it rather than replying to it. Replying
gives it a second life at the top of the list; reporting puts it in front of
someone who can act. How reports work.
